June is International Pride Month.

It is a time to uplift and celebrate the voices, identities and communities of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer people and other sexuality, gender and bodily diverse (LGBTQIA+).

To celebrate International Pride Month, we are sharing resources that may be useful for LGBTIQA+ community members. Including resources and information relevant to the National Disability Insurance Scheme and My Aged Care.

Pride Foundation Australia
Pride Foundation Australia provides funding for projects that address the systemic disadvantage of LGBTQIA+ communities and individuals in Australia. Their publications library includes information about LGBTQIA+ and disability, homelessness, ageing and, refugee and asylum seekers.

LGBTIQ+ Health Australia

LGBTIQ+ Health Australia, is the national peak health organisation in Australia for organisations and individuals that provide health-related programs, services and research. 

 

NDIS Resources

LGBTIQA+ Strategy

The National Disability Insurance Agency’s (NDIA) LGBTIQA+ Strategy outlines their commitment to being respectful and responsive to the diverse needs of people with disability who identify as LGBTIQA+, their families, carers and communities. The strategy was developed in consultation with people with disability who identify as LGBTIQA+ and peak organisations in the community and disability sector.


QueerAbility: A Toolkit to Access the NDIS
This toolkit  has information about the NDIS and the application process. It also has information about self-care and other supports. It was produced by ACON with support of People with Disability Australia (PWDA) and funded by the NDIA.

Webinar: LGBTI People and the NDIS
This webinar covers the human rights and social model principles of the NDIS, information on eligibility and the supports available. It was created by MindOUT and People with Disability Australia (PWDA).

 

My Aged Care Resources

My Aged Care provides several resources for the LGBTIQ+ community to help guide decision making regarding their providers and support. The National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Strategy aims to ensure that people have the same opportunities and options in aged care that are available to all Australians.


Actions to Support LGBTI Elders: A Guide for Consumers
This guide is designed to support conversations with aged care providers. It can also help people working in aged care to better understand LGBTIQ+ needs.

The LGBTI Alliance offer a short guide to assist you with ideas for questions to ask before deciding whether or not you will access aged care services. This includes services providing home care, residential care, or any other age-related care that you may need.

Community Visitors Scheme
ACON Health provides the LGBTIQ+ Community Visitors Scheme in Sydney metropolitan and the Blue Mountains to recipients of Australian Government subsidised Home Care Packages. The Community Visitors Scheme is about reducing social isolation of older LGBTIQ+ people by providing company and friendship. Contact ACON if you have questions about the service, want to refer someone or yourself for visits, or would like to become a volunteer visitor.

When using the acronym LGBTIQ+ we are using the language that is known within the ageing and aged care sector. We recognise and acknowledge that there are people of diverse relationships, bodies, sexualities and genders that are not reflected within this acronym.
