Patti Conway has been volunteering at MND NSW for 8 years in the Hunter/Newcastle region.
A personal connection to motor neurone disease led Patti to volunteer for MND NSW.
“I lost my father 33 years ago to MND. I was working with a friend whose father got diagnosed and I sponsored her and attended the MND walk that year,” she said.
“That was when I decided I had the strength to volunteer to help others.”
She also saw the need for MND NSW to have volunteer support to be able to assist people living with motor neurone disease.
“Where would any charity be without volunteers?,” she said.
“I see just how valuable just one volunteer can be. It is a wonderful cause helping people and every minute we volunteer it helps the cause, not to mention I have also had a few friends and/or their parents that have been diagnosed.”
As an Ambassador for MND NSW, Patti helps with a wide range of activities.
“I organise and communicate with our team of volunteers up here in the Hunter and seek volunteers when required,” she said.
“I will attend any community functions that arise, that may involve speaking about MND or accepting a cheque. I have previously volunteered at “Living Well with MND” conferences, and every year I assist with the Hunter Walk d’Feet MND event.”
“I also organise and sell merchandise for MND week in May every year.”
Patti continues to volunteer at MND NSW, and said she enjoys ‘helping and meeting people with MND, and making a difference by assisting where I can’.
“It can be one of the most rewarding things you will do. You can be as involved as you like, and to see the smiles on the faces of people suffering with this hideous disease, makes it all that worthwhile,” Patti said.
