July is Disability Pride Month which celebrates the different ways people experience disability and promote awareness.
The 2026 theme is “The World Works Better With Us.” This theme highlights that when people with disability are included, supported, and respected, our schools, workplaces, healthcare, and transportation work better for everyone.
The Disability Pride Month flag showcases five colours representing the broad sections of the disability community:
- Green represents sensory disabilities
- Blue represents mental illness and psychiatric disabilities
- White represents invisible and undiagnosed disabilities
- Gold represents neurodiversity
- Red represents physical disabilities
People with disability face many barriers in everyday life that prevent them from participating, connecting, and feeling included. These barriers may include:
- Systematic
- Physical
- Communication
- Attitudes and stigma
This is also true for people living with MND. People living with MND often report that there is a lack of understanding about MND and are conscious of the stigma associated with it. At MND NSW, we recognise the barriers that are faced by people living with MND and aim to improve the quality of life through support, information, and equipment.
